E - learning Training Package to support Medicare Item 10997

The Australian General Practice Network (AGPN), in partnership with the Royal College of Nursing Australia (RCNA) and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, has launched an eLearning training package to support Medicare Item 10997.

The modules can be accessed on the RCNA 3LP website at the following web link www.3lp.rcna.org.au/10997 and follow the instructions on the front page under Getting Started. You do not need to be a member of RCNA to access the modules.

The package consists of a prerequisite foundation module and a set of disease specific modules that cover the topic areas of arthritis, asthma, cancer, coronary heart disease, dementia, diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

The foundation module incorporates three (3) units: an overview of chronic disease; care planning and management, including roles of health care team members and legal and practical information on accessing and using Medicare Item 10997; and a self- management support unit. This module is strongly recommended as a prerequisite to ensure good understanding of chronic disease care planning management and the application of Medicare Item 10997 is gained before undertaking any of the disease-specific modules.

The package is a flexible, self-paced learning tool that enables individuals to design their own study timetable. A Certificate of Completion is awarded upon successful completion of each module. RCNA Continuing Nurse Education points are available for nurses upon successful completion.

The package content has been developed by expert organisations ensuring best practice is contained within each of the modules. All self-assessment tasks, including case-studies and virtual scenarios have been designed to comply with Medicare Item 10997 application and implementation. This design will assist General Practitioners (GPs) to ensure that Practice Nurses and registered Aboriginal Health Workers who successfully undertake the eLearning package are appropriately qualified and trained to provide monitoring and support for patients with a chronic disease care plan.

A Facilitators Guide/Information Pack has been designed specifically for AGPN members to assist them with encouraging practice nurses and registered Aboriginal Health Workers with uptake of the eLearning training package to support Medicare Item 10997.

The guide is available here for download and use by any health industry or educational organisation to assist with familiarisation of the eLearning training package.

The package has been accredited to the following standards:

  • Competency Standards for Nurses in General Practice (ANF 2006)
  • Competency Standards Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Competency Standards associated with Community Services Training Package CHC08
  • Australian Quality Training Framework compliant
