Introduction to nursing in general practice

The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing has funded the Australian General Practice Network (AGPN) to develop a National Introduction to General Practice Program, formally referred to as the Refresher Program.

Nursing in General Practice is developing as a dynamic and vibrant area of the nursing profession. The AGPN National Practice Nurse Workforce Survey 2007 shows the estimated number of practice nurses in 2007 was 7824, compared with 4924 in 2005. This represents an increase of 59 per cent.

Support for recruitment of nurses into general practice is pivotal to ensure that practices can readily access an appropriately skilled workforce. Current literature defines the difficulty in attracting nurses to fill vacancies within the acute care sector. Through experience within the national Nursing in General Practice Program (NiGP), AGPN are aware that some practices are also experiencing difficulty in recruiting nurses particularly in urban areas. Many nurses recruited into general practices are ‘poached’ from other health care sectors.

AGPN believes there is scope to attract nurses not currently in the nursing workforce back into nursing through a career in general practice. Development of the Introduction to General Practice Program will provide nurses with the skills and confidence to seek employment within the primary health care setting.

The Introduction to General Practice Program course content was developed with assistance from the university of the Sunshine Coast. The content and format of the program were piloted in two general practice networks, one in November 2008 and the second in February 2009. Feedback from the pilots and content of other resources produced by the AGPN NiGP program has influenced the final content.

A comprehensive package has been developed to complement the course content including:

  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Participants’ resource
  • Advertisements, registration forms and evaluation forms

The Introduction to General Practice Program has been endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing Australia (RCNA), the program Attracting nine RCNA Continuing Nurse Education points and by the Australian Practice Nurses Association (APNA), the program attracting nine APNA Continuing Professional Development points.
